On September 4 2020, the statue of a Dockhand was unveiled by the Mayor of Nijmegen Hubert Bruls,on the quai of the River Waal in the city of Nijmegen. It is cast in aluminum and measures 300cm. in height. It was financed by the inhabitants of Nijmegen and the industrial sector of nautic and logistic companies active in the region. The statue is a memorial to the dockworkers who contributed a great deal to the prosperity of the city in former times, but as workers were forgotten and not valued. The profession had a bad reputation and the workers were among the poorest. The sculpture is meant as a official rehabilitation for these people and the deprivation they suffered.
The work pictures a dockhand in action, carrying a heavy load on his shoulders. The sculpture bears the portrait of an actual inhabitant of Nijmegen, chosen by the artist on the basis of characteristic and plastic qualities. It is a classical sculpture that refers to other examples of dockhands and images of working-class heroes in 19th century sculpture. It is produced by Margriet Hovens and Willem Muijs and cast by the artist herself.
Op 4 September 2020, werd het standbeeld van een kaaisjouwer onthuld door de burgemeester van Nijmegen Hubert Bruls, op de kade van de rivier de Waal in Nijmegen. Het is gegoten in aluminium en is 3 meter hoog. Het is gefinancierd door de inwoners van Nijmegen en door de industriële sector van nautische en logistieke bedrijven die actief zijn in de regio. Het beeld is een herdenkingsmonument voor de kaaisjouwers die een groot aandeel hebben gehad in de voorspoed van de stad in vroeger tijden, maar die als arbeiders werden vergeten en niet geaardeerd. Het beroep had een slechte naam en de kaaisjouwers waren de armsten in de stad. Het beeld is bedoeld als een officiële rehabilitatie voor deze mensen en de uitsluiting waaronder zij leden.
Het werk toont een kaaisjouwer in actie, terwijl hij een zware last op zijn schouders draagt. Het beeld bevat een portret van een levende Nijmegenaar die is gekozen op basis van karakteristieke en platische kwaliteiten van de kop. Het is een klassieke sculptuur dat verwijst naar andere voorbeelden van kaaisjouwers en beelden van arbeiderhelden in de 19e eeuwse sculptuur. Het is geproduceerd door Margriet Hovens en Willem Muijs en gegoten door de kunstenares zelf.
